POLICY ON FLYING UNMANNED AIRCRAFT 2017

The objective of the Mackenzie District Council Policy on Flying Unmanned Aircraft 2015 is to provide guidance on the use of unmanned aircraft, commonly referred to as drones, on or over Mackenzie District Council property and facilities. As part of this Policy the Council has given permission for the operation of model aircraft (weighing less than 25kg) over land owned or occupied by the Council, provided the conditions of the Policy are complied with.

Flying unmanned aircraft over other land, including private, LINZ, DOC and NZTA owned land etc. is managed by the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority. It is noted that flying drones over private land requires the consent of all land owners and people you intend to fly above as per the New Zealand Civil Aviation Rules Part 101. It should also be noted that flying within 4km of any uncontrolled airport is not permitted, In the Mackenzie District this includes most of the Tekapo and Twizel townships and the Church of the Good Shepherd etc.

For more information please refer to the Mackenzie District Council Policy on Flying Unmanned Aircraft 2015 and the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority Flying with Control Brochure.
